What is RCM Certificate Program?

The RCM Certificate Program provides a recognized national standard and sequenced program for people studying music privately, from beginner through advanced levels. The program’s examinations allow students to track their progress and celebrate their accomplishments.

What is RCM Grade?

RCM grades go from 1 to 10, but there are levels both before and after that. Before grade 1 there is a “preparatory” level, which you can think of as a sort of musical kindergarten. Grade 8 represents a solid understanding and competency in music.

The Royal Conservatory examinations provide a national standard for students, parents and teachers to track and measure progress and achievements. Preparing for and successfully completing an examination builds self-confidence and helps students develop a sense of pride.

How long does it take to complete RCM?

Some students move through the RCM grades very quickly, doing one or two exams a year, while others progress more slowly with one exam every year and a half to two years. Typical progress would see students doing one exam per year of piano study. Preparing for a grade 10 exam or ARCT diploma often takes two years.

Is Arct a diploma?

The Associate Diploma (ARCT) and the Licentiate Diploma (LRCM) are the highest academic standings awarded by The RCM Certificate Program. The ARCT is available for Performer (all instruments), Pedagogy (Piano and Violin) and Teacher (Strings, Winds, Brass, and Voice).
