How do you read a PAC on an ECG?

There is an abnormal P wave, usually followed by a normal QRS complex….PACs often occur in repeating patterns:

  1. Bigeminy — every other beat is a PAC.
  2. Trigeminy — every third beat is a PAC.
  3. Quadrigeminy — every fourth beat is a PAC.
  4. Couplet – two consecutive PACs.
  5. Triplet — three consecutive PACs.

What do PACs sound like?

PACs—common and not dangerous If the PACs are conducted, the ventricles have extra contractions, and this sounds like intermittent extra heart beats. If the PACs are nonconducted, this can cause short intermittent slowing of the heart beat while the heart recovers; this may sound like an intermittent slow heart rate.

What causes PACs on ECG?

PACs are also commonly referred to as atrial premature complexes (APCs), premature supraventricular complexes, premature supraventricular beat, and premature atrial beat. This phenomenon can be caused by an assortment of medical diseases, structural abnormalities, pharmaceuticals, and non-regulated compounds.

What is a PAC rhythm?

Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are extra heartbeats that begin in one of your heart’s two upper chambers (atria). These extra beats disrupt your regular heart rhythm. They are a type of heart arrhythmia.

What is the difference between PVC and PAC?

Premature atrial contractions (PAC) result from premature electrical activation originating in the upper chambers (the atria) of your heart. Premature ventricular contractions (PVC) result from premature electrical activation originating in the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of your heart.

Can PACs cause chest pain?

PAC patients may also experience dizziness or chest pain. Treatment for symptomatic patients includes medications such as beta blockers or calcium blockers.

Are PACs serious?

PACs do not typically cause damage to the heart and can occur in healthy individuals with no known heart disease. Patients with PACs often do not experience symptoms and are diagnosed incidentally.

What is the purpose of a PAC?

In the United States, a political action committee (PAC) is a 527 organization that pools campaign contributions from members and donates those funds to campaigns for or against candidates, ballot initiatives, or legislation.

Are PACs wide?

They are narrow complexes. Since they come from the atrium, they will eventually travel through the AV node and use the normal conduction system to spread to the ventricles. Unlike a premature ventricular contraction, which is wide-complexed since it does not use the normal ventricular conduction system.
